Astudillo and women linked to mining analyzed the sector | GEMERA

The Minister of Mining held a meeting via teleconference with women working in different areas of mining activity.

Since the beginning of Governor Sergio Uñac’s term in office, the government of San Juan has been promoting the implementation of concrete actions on gender equality as a state policy. An example of this is the different spaces for debate that have been proposed in the framework of the San Juan Agreement, and the percentage of women in the provincial Cabinet, which in some cases is a pioneer. In this regard, following the idea of the San Juan Model, the Minister of Mining, Carlos Astudillo, met with women linked to the mining sector in the province and representatives of these women at the international level.

The meeting was held through a teleconference with the participation of Gladys Smith, representative of Latin America IWIM; Adriana Garde, from CAME; Adriana Martignoni, from UIA; Silvia Rodríguez, president of the Honorary Commission IWIM Argentina; Celeste González, general director of IWIM Argentina, Marita Ahumada, director of the Advisory Committee IWIM Argentina and in representation of the Ministry the graduate in Geology and member of the Mining Council, Natalia Marchese.

Gladys Smith, from London, thanked the provincial government for its commitment: «We see that in San Juan there is a development of mining, but above all we see that there is a government that opens the door for us that many times are denied or difficult to access. Thank you very much, Minister, for establishing this dialogue and allowing us to exchange experiences in order to know what our reality is as a gender in the sector. It is important that we keep this channel open,» said one of the most significant representatives of International Woman in Mining.

In this regard, the head of the mining portfolio said: «It is moving to hear them and to know that there are women who have decided to be protagonists, who have decided to take the lead in the great challenges proposed by society, as well as with the level of excellence with which they carry out their profession. From the government of San Juan we have a marked agenda of gender equity, in the Ministry of Mining we have 50% of positions occupied by women. They have an open dialogue channel here to present all the concerns they have and to be able to find solutions together,» said Astudillo.

For her part, geologist Natalia Marchese, a member of the Provincial Mining Council, said, «Today we are all looking to be protagonists and to show that we can work from our different roles. We are opening roads and we have to build bridges for the next generations,» she said.

What follows is to work together to outline actions to achieve the greatest possible global participation of women throughout the mining value chain.
